Three years in a row, Wichita Northwest found themselves in the state championship game, and three years in a row, the Grizzlies felt the heartbreak of losing after making it so far. Senior quarterback Jaylen Mason is one of the many key players who plans to get the Grizzlies back over their state championship slump.
“Jaylen is out catalyst,” head coach Steve Martin said. “When he is on, everyone is on, he has worked hard on his deficiencies to improve his game this offseason. People will know why he has the opportunities he does this season.”
Mason has been all-state the last two years and has already amassed over 3,200 passing yards, 1,000 rushing yards, and over 50 touchdowns. Now, the senior who is seen as one of the best in the state is ready to take another enormous step.
“Being seen as one of the best in the state is a humbling feeling because it’s God using me for more than just football,” Mason said. “And it’s progress for what I have worked for over the years.”
The senior has been a difference maker ever since he joined the Grizzlies; this year is no exception.
“The team’s goal is to win a state championship,” Mason said. “My goals are 3,000 passing yards, a 68 percent completion rating, 35 touchdowns, 800 rushing yards, and 15 touchdowns.
Mason’s game has garnered him a lot of accolades and attention. After his final year at Wichita Northwest, the senior will make the short drive up to Lawrence, where he will continue his academic and athletic career at the University of Kansas.
