Q&A with Wichita Souths Boys Basketball Coach Charles Gunter – Team Spotlight – Presented by Visit Wichita

VYPE: What are the goals of the team this season?

The goals this is to get back to the state playoffs and try to make run at state.

VYPE: What was the team’s best moment from last season?

The best moment last year was probably when we beat a top ranked undefeated Buhler team in the Salina Invitational to advance to the Championship in the midseason tournament.

VYPE: Who is the team’s dynamic duo, and why?

We haven’t really established a dynamic duo yet due to the teams youth. Two players Asa Tarver and Aven Mboule have shown some signs playing real well together. They are also AAU teammates play together in the spring and summer (Wichita Padres). Asa Tarver will start playing again this January as he recovers from last year’s ACL tear. Andre Baker and Parker Hardgrave have looked pretty good together on the court as well.

VYPE: What is the team’s favorite memory together?

This team is a new team together so they haven’t established any memories yet together.

VYPE: What has been the biggest impression the team has made on you (the coach), and why?

The biggest impression they have made so far is they are holding each other accountable on and off the court. A lot of positive vibes with each other even through some adversity.

VYPE: What is your favorite part of working with this team?

My favorite part about working with this team is putting together the young talented sophomores and juniors we have with the few seniors and watching them grow together. These players really want to win at all costs, but they must get better at strategizing together and being efficient on both ends of the floor. I can see some improvements with the players IQ’s and court awareness. Now it just to be consistent in game play.

VYPE: Are you any players involved in academic excellence activities such as the National Honor Society, Student Council, or other academic clubs?

Asa Tarver and Jalen Manning have made the Academic Honor Roll.
