VYPE: What are your personal goals for the year?
My personal goals for the year are to enjoy my senior year and have a more positive outlook on things. I am trying to practice being more grateful for things too.
VYPE: What is the most fun you have had in the last year?
I went to Guatemala this past summer with a group of kids from my school to help do service projects and also just visit. It was so much fun! We went swimming in Lake Atitlan and hiked a volcano, and it was so beautiful and an experience I won’t forget. Getting to know my peers better and working together to do the service projects was a lot of fun.
VYPE: Who is your favorite teacher from any grade, and why?
My favorite teacher is Mrs. Daniel from 2nd and 4th grade. She moved grades, and I was so happy she got to be my teacher again because she was so much fun. We did science experiments on how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and how to build an oreo, so it made learning so much better. She also was my first teacher of color, so that was something that I could relate to because she looked more like me than my other teachers.
VYPE: What is your favorite athletic memory?
My favorite athletic memory is from my freshman season of volleyball. The entire season was so much fun because all of the older girls were so welcoming, and I was the only freshman on varsity. Hosting substate was my favorite because we all danced in the gym before and ate breakfast. Then during the games, I just remember playing so hard for the girls around me and for the team, and the sense of family during that game was so strong.
VYPE: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?
My club volleyball teammate Maddie Schrandt made the biggest impression on me because of her work ethic and drive to succeed. She is also so much fun to be around off and on the court because she pushes herself to be the best, and therefore makes me want to be better to help her too.
VYPE: What is your favorite part of being on this team?
My favorite part of being on the team is the fact that I’ve grown up in high school volleyball, and I’ve seen all the progress that me and my teammates have made. It makes me super happy and proud to watch younger teammates grow as well as myself.
VYPE: You can pick any place for a summer vacation. Where do you go, and who do you take with you?
The Bahamas with my family – my three brothers and parents
VYPE: If we gave you $500 and you had to spend it in the next 24 hours, what would you spend it on?
I would spend it on a plane ticket to fly my oldest brother in from St. Paul, Minnesota, where he lives to come to see us and maybe go watch a sporting event together – a hockey game or maybe the new Ant-Man movie.
VYPE: Do you participate in any community service projects?
Yes, I volunteer with my church and do turkey drives and mission trips. I’ve gone on a service trip to Guatemala, where we brought sewing machines to women who completed a sewing course, we built a cement floor for a family’s home, and we also helped build a bunk bed.
VYPE: What Clubs or Campus groups are you involved with and why?
I’m in the Feminist club, and I started the Boys’ Volleyball club at my school. I am the coach/president of that club. I think it’s important to help make sure our school supports both girls and boys in activities, so that’s why I started the boys’ program. Also, Wichita is behind in the men’s game of volleyball, and it’s a good chance for boys to go to college and get scholarships to play a fun game. I also think It’s important to be aware of the issues in the world and support equality for everyone.
VYPE: Are you involved in academic excellence activities such as the National Honor Society, Student Council, or other academic clubs?
Yes, I’m in the National Honors Society and Spanish Honors Society.
