VYPE recently caught up with Coach Darham Rogers of the Wichita East Boys’ Track team. Rodgers expressed nothing but school spirit sharing that “I truly love being a part of the faculty at Wichita East. I teach in a great department. The track and field coaching staff is made up of some of the best people I know. They care deeply about our kids not only on the track and field but also as young adults.”
He went on to share his pre-season hope for the team which was “For all our athletes to find success and be more physically fit!” Rodgers then shined a light on what the spirit of this team is really like which can be summed up in one word, “comradery.” Rodger noted the teams’ “positive” and “gritty-attitude” as well as the “support” they show one another.
Rodgers who also works in the “Blue Aces AVID college preparatory program”, recalled his favorite coaching memory. Saying “I would say that it is our Boys Cross Country team winning the first GWAL title since 1963 in 2018 and then again in 2019. Those boys worked so hard to get to that point and overcame a lot of obstacles.”
Aside from that, Rodgers’ favorite moment was when the team was finally able to get “back to the KU relays for the first time” after the pandemic.
