Wichita Trinity’s Alex Majors had some big shoes to fill coming up to play golf at Trinity. Majors’ older brother Sam, also played all four years of high school under coach Derrek Ziesch.
After a circumstance with the coaching staff, Ziesch stepped up to coach Majors and the rest of the team, which bonded the team together more than they could have ever imagined.
“I didn’t coach during the 2022 season,” Ziesch said. “I got a call this year that they needed a coach, and wondered if I could step in.”
Ziesch knew he had a strong team walking into the season, and a persistent freshman ready to play.
“Majors was a freshman this year, and he played number one bag all season,” Ziesch said. “He is just a coachable and teachable player. He brings a very good spirit to the team. He’s an overall happy kid, a great golfer, and good company. He is one of the best freshmen I’ve ever gotten to coach. He has a lot of potential. Although he didn’t score as well as we all thought he would at league, he still played consistent golf.”
With a successful season, it still didn’t end quite how everyone thought it would.
“Alex is a quiet, mild-mannered, not very showy, golfer who spends a lot of time working on his game,” Ziesch said. “He missed the state tournament by one stroke.”
