Q&A with Wichita Heights’ LaiLa Christmon – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Hutchinson Community College

VYPE recently had the chance to interview Wichita Heights volleyball player LaiLa Christmon to learn more about who she is.

VYPE: What are your personal goals for the year?

My Personal goals for the year is to grow. Mentally, Physically and Academically. I want to have a year full of development and flourishing moments. I want to expand my horizon, prepare and to get ready to enter a new era of life after High-school.

VYPE: What is the most fun you have had in the last year?

The most fun thats i’ve had this year was The Riverfest back in June. The carnival was my favorite part as well as the funnel cakes. Being with friends and being able to enjoy a week worth of fun , was awesome. It was great seeing our community and small business all in the same central area. I enjoyed it and i’m looking forward to attending Next Summer.

VYPE: Who is vour favorite teacher from any grade, and why?

My favorite teacher that i’ve encountered over the years was my middle school librarian, Ms.Foster. She is the most selfless and kindhearted person I’ve ever met. She was my biggest fan off and on the court during grade school. She always encouraged me to never give up even when things get hard.

VYPE: What is your favorite athletic memory?

My Favorite Athletic memory , well more so an Accomplishment was being awarded the GWAL VOLLEYBALL HONORABLE MENTION ALL-CITY MIDDLE BLOCKER last season. It felt great! and It gave me an even deeper desire and motive to double the effort and hard work i put in. I wouldn’t have achieved it without my teammates having my back and my coaches pushing me to be the best version of myself. I can’t wait to see what new memories and achievements this season has in stored for not only me , but for Heights Volleyball!

VYPE: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?

A Teammate that has left the biggest impression on me, is my previous teammate, Skylyn Hogan-Turner. We connected like magnets on the courts and on the sidelines. She was my biggest hype man , and I was hers. When I was down on the court, her wise words would lift and motivate me… “Shake it off Lai, Next Play”. We played the same position so we related to a lot of principles when it came to volleyball. She now took her career to the next level at Coffeyville Community College, proud of you sky!

VYPE: What is your favorite part of being on this team?

My favorite part is not only being involved but to be A captain on this team. It feels great to be a team leader and to help guide my teammates through not only the good but the tough situations as well. I love being able to find a solution when adversity hits, and the feeling of winning is truly the best when the whole organization puts in the work to be successful. I love the bond me and my former teammates share, we motivate one another daily and push each other to be better. We learn as we go, and strive for an ultimate goal… which is winning. Our coaches provide 110% of endless support, as we supply effort in return.

VYPE: You can pick any place for a summer vacation. Where do you go, and who do you take with you?

An ideal Summer Vacation would be to visit , Bora Bora or The Maldives. Both places are fulfilled with beautiful scenery, and clear blue water. Out of anybody i would want to take my Bestfriend Anglie and My Mom, one because they deserve it to have the time of their lives and two we would have a blast and would get the best tan ever.

VYPE: If we gave you $500 and you had to spend it in the next 24 hours, what would you spend it on?

If i was to receive $500, I would invest it into stocks, and go on a mini shopping spree for essentials that i needed , i would also Donate some of the Money to the Boy and Girls Club as well.

VYPE: Do you participate in any community service projects?

Yes! I attend Northeast Magnet Highschool, and I am in the Law Magnet! In order for me to receive my Law Magnet Certification I have to have 100 community service hours by The end of my Senior Year! I’ve helped with dances , clean up crew , staying after hours during events and helping out during spirit week!

VYPE: What Clubs or Campus groups are you involved with and why?

I am involved with Rise up for Youth.. Aka Sisterhood! Which is a mentoring program that supports young ladies my age! It’s for the students who wants to find their place, and helps students find a clear purpose in life. Sisterhood is for the young  who wants to grow. I am one of those students! And want to be counseled to develop a plan to become an accountable adult and find my way into the world after high school.
