East High cross country athlete Ruby Moore has some very specific goals in mind for this season. Sharing with VYPE “A couple of my goals for this cross country season are to get as close to a 20:00 5k as possible, to get in the top 15 in East High 5k history (which I accomplished, I’m now number twelve), and to go to State either individually or (preferably) as a team. In track, I want to go sub-5:50 in the 1600, sub-12:26 in the 3200, and go to state in the 1600 and 3200.”
Cross country has been a part of Moore’s life for many years. Going all the way back to her seventh grade year when she had her first meet. Saying “It had not been my choice to join cross country in middle school, I only did it to make my dad happy. So when I raced at my first meet, after weeks of hard 6 a.m. practices I felt so proud. Feeling the excited energy of the meet and knowing I made my dad proud felt really good and got me hooked on cross country.”
Moore went on to talk about one of her teammates – Ciara Johnson. Telling VYPE “I first ran with Ciara in my freshman year track and she’s been very important in my running ever since. She always motivates me to be better and faster and I’m super excited to have her on the cross-country team this year because she always makes runs better with her jokes and is a fantastic training partner.”
When we inquired about her activities off the track Moore said “I’m involved with many clubs at East. I just joined the Scrubs club at my school because I’m interested in the medical field. I’ve also been a part of the Spanish club for 2 years and I’ve been in Feminist club for 3 years. I’m the Junior yearbook editor for my school and I really like it. This is the 100th anniversary of East High so this yearbook is very important to our school’s history and I’m really excited to be a part of it.” She also participates in National Honors Society and Spanish Honors Society.
“I participate in small acts of community service because of my involvement in National Honors Society. I will also be doing community service with Spanish Honors Society at my school. This past summer I went on a community service project with my Spanish class to Guatemala for two weeks, donated sewing machines, and did work to help impoverished families” said Moore.
