Southeast’s Leonel Sweet – Athlete Spotlight Presented By Shelter Insurance, Tommy Leach

By Hayden Swope

Leonel Sweet of Wichita Southeast is coming off of an injury from last summer, but is completely healed and ready to get back out on the field. “I’ve been focusing on regaining back my strength in my knee from dislocating it last summer,” Sweet said. “It was a minor setback but I’m healthier than ever and ready for the season.” Preparing not only himself and his knee, Sweet has also worked with his team over the offseason to ready themselves for the season. “I have attended many camps this summer,” Sweet said.

“I have been training with my personal trainer Jack Tomlinson. I’ve noticed much improvement and will continue to keep working leading up to the season. I’m excited to showcase my talent and lead the city in interceptions.” While working to improve his knee, Sweet also had other weaknesses he hoped to improve. With summer camps and training, that’s exactly what he did. “One area I’m working on is my speed and hip mobility,” Sweet said. “I’ve been doing sprints and many different types of workouts to gain that quick twitch that has been helping me be faster coming out of my breaks.”

Sweet knows exactly what he wants to do after high school, and is excited to see where he’ll end up to achieve his goals. “After high school I want to pursue my dream career, an Immigration Lawyer,” Sweet said. “I’m open to any colleges that have a good education for me.”
