Q&A with Wichita East’s Roland Koepp – Team Spotlight – Presented by Visit Wichita

VYPE: What are the goals of the team this season?

Our long term goal is to win a regional championship, our mid-term goal was to have clear expectations and understanding of our system throughout the team, and our short term-process is to set a goal as a team and individually every practice.

VYPE: What was the team’s best moment from last season?

Winning the City League title for the third time in five years was definitely the best moment.

VYPE: Who is the team’s dynamic duo, and why?

Our “dynamic duo” would have to be both of our goalkeepers Jesus Garcia and Adrian Esparza-Parga. Both of them work so well together and learn from each other. They also keep the energy alive throughout the squad.

VYPE: What is the team’s favorite memory together?

Our pre-season team retreat where we played games, broke bread, and set goals together.

VYPE: What has been the biggest impression the team has made on you (the coach), and why?

The biggest impression this team has made on me is their ability to take responsibility and ownership of their own performance. They set their own goals and hold each other to that standard. Usually, a coach might have to motivate their players to work hard. In this case, I sometimes find myself having to be the positive light that shows them that they are progressing and getting better. They are really hard on themselves because they want to compete, and that is a fantastic problem to have as a coach.

VYPE: What is your favorite part of working with this team?

My favorite part of working with the team is their sense of humor. I thoroughly enjoy going to practice because I know they are able to have fun while working hard at the same time. They make me laugh and brighten my day all the time, which helps us all during the long season.

VYPE: Does the team participate in any community service projects?

Our community service projects at the moment have to do with keeping our grass field at East as nice and playable as possible. However, If anyone has other service projects we can participate in, please do not hesitate to reach out!

VYPE: Are you any players involved in academic excellence activities such as the National Honor Society, Student Council, or other academic clubs?

Jesus Garcia is a Violinist, and an East High Student Ambassador and Cesar Saludes was voted Homecoming King. Modou Sabally and Eliot Hill are both in the band. Shadman Khan is also in Academic Decathlon, and I believe we have a few in Asian Club as well.
