Northwest athlete Alayna Alvarez told VYPE in a recent interview “My favorite part of being on this team is the ability to have fun yet still take it seriously when needed so I look forward to practices to help give me a break from my academics”.
This season, Alvarez is working “to lead my team and build them up throughout the year as we have a pretty new team”. Explaining that “One thing my sport has taught me that I use in my daily life is communication skills. In softball it is important that you communicate when you are on the field and as a leader it is very important not only to communicate but know how to communicate with different people and softball has helped me improve that significantly”.
When she isn’t on the softball field Alvarez participates in “National Honors Society because it helps improve my community service and my leaderships skills, and Young Life to connect with other students through our faith”. Sharing “Currently, a club that I am involved in within my school is putting together a grab and go library outside of the school and I am a part of raising money for the books. Outside of school, I volunteer as a young girls basketball coach”.
Alvarez told VYPE that the people who have inspired her actions are “My grandma-Nana has always believed that I would achieve great things in life and now she gets to hold my hand every step of the way and help me achieve those things she believed I could do. Also, my Uncle Ro who was an outstanding athlete and pushed me to play higher levels as he knew I had talent, now he gives me the strength to play everyday”.
