Wichita Southeast’s Kristy Duong – Track Spotlight- Sponsored by The Tire Store

By Ken Hansard

Wichita Southeast senior track athlete Kristy Duong, who classifies herself as a distance runner, competes in the 800, 1600, and the 4 x 800 relay for the Golden Buffaloes. Duong, a competitor with many diverse interests and talents, is just looking for one final run, “Prior to the season, I was just looking forward to competing in one last season with my coach and teammates.  Now, I’m looking forward to regionals because it’ll be my last meet ever.  My biggest goal for the end of the season is to PR in both the 1600 and 800.”

As a senior, Duong recognizes the finality of the coming weeks, but she also prides herself on her accomplishments as a leader, “I see myself as a leader towards the distance runners.”  That leadership, according to Kristy, comes directly from her coaches.  “A challenge I have struggled with is believing in myself, but my coaches pushed me to reach my fullest potential.  I credit my love of the sport to the support from my coaches and teammates.”

Duong participates in several activities off the track and outside of the classroom.  She is a member of Southeast’s Buff TV crew, she worked as a Freshman Mentor, and she is also a member of the Golden Buffaloes Multicultural Club.

Kristy’s plans for the future include beginning at Wichita State University in the fall to study Health Science and specifically Pre-Dental Hygiene.  Eventually she would like to make a career for herself as a dental hygienist.
