Cencere Thompson Wichita Northwest – Athlete Spotlight Presented By Old Chicago

By Matt Browning

Wichita Northwest has a rich history in running backs, so when Cencere Thompson talks about a goal he has for the upcoming season, that speaks volumes. “I want to become the leading rusher in history for Northwest and earn first team all-state honors,” Thompson said. Last season, Thompson racked up nearly 1,500 allpurpose yards, while also reaching the endzone 18 times. He was named first team all-league and honorable mention all-state. As a sophomore, Thompson rushed for nearly 1,200 yards and 12 touchdowns. The sky is the limit for how gaudy Thompson’s numbers can be in 2023.

“This upcoming season I’m most excited about getting to play with my teammates that I’ve been playing with for half of my life,” Thompson said. “It’s our last season together and we definitely have a lot to show this year for everyone. Having that extra gear was something Thompson worked on over the offseason and he can already see a significant difference from a year ago.

“So far with the off-season I’ve been training with my trainer James Tabor almost every day in order for me to become stronger and faster than everyone else,” Thompson said. “In order for me to improve on it I’ve been working on explosive movements more in my workouts within school workouts and the ones with my trainer. It’s definitely gotten a whole lot better and I can’t wait to showcase it this season.”
