Wichita Northwest cross country athlete Bishop Myers told VYPE in a recent interview “My favorite part of being on a team is an easy answer. They are FAMILY. We have given blood, sweat and tears together through not only our successes but through our challenges as well. Everyone has a unique role on our team, therefore there is always someone stepping in and stepping up to give support wherever needed. I wish there were more people in our society that could experience the family aspect we have on this team. Unfortunately, we live in a day and age where many people experienced some type of family disfunction and many choices are made with not always the best outcome.”
As the year and season progresses “I have different levels of goals that I try to set and achieve for myself. First, I have long term goals such as graduate from college one day. Since I am in my senior year though I am finding that a lot of my long-term goals are turning into short-term goals. For example, Getting accepted into college could happen any day now. As for running I have a couple goals I plan to check off. If I can run a sub-17 5K, that would cross off a big goal and in doing so I believe will help cross off the next goal of qualifying for the KSHSAA State Tournament” said Myers.
Myers went on the share “My favorite athletic memory occurred in my sophomore year. The extra running and work I had put in was finally showing by my making the varsity. Up to this point I had not been able to achieve success at the varsity level. Years before that I wrestled a bit under my dad. At the beginning of the season I was getting beaten pretty easy. One night before the last tournament of the season my dad, who was a state wrestling champion, and I came up with a plan of how we would beat all the kids that has beaten me prior in the season. Low and behold I stuck to our plan and was able to dominate by pinning all 4 athletes that has previously beaten me.”
Myers also spoke about his extracurriculars saying “I don’t spread myself too thin with being involved with many groups. Not that there haven’t been opportunities for me to be involved in other groups and activities, and great ones at that. This allows me to focus in and give all I have to the couple of one’s I am involved with. Academically, I have been involved in AVID since I was in middle school. I have utilized this
group to help prepare me for my future college career. It has recently been very helpful with applying for colleges and scholarships. Athletically, I focus primarily on my running for the Cross Country Team and Track.”
