Wichita Northwest athlete Brooke Drees spoke with VYPE to discuss who she is. Expressing that her “biggest goal is to get accepted to a prestigious engineering school like MIT or Caltech. Other big goals for me include defending our league title in hockey and qualifying for Business Professionals of America nationals again”.
Drees stated that her favorite part about her team is “Just the fun of it. Coach Martens always makes sure that we have fun out on the course, and everyone on the team does their part to make all teammates, new and old, feel welcome and encouraged to do their best”. She also credits fellow grizzly Sotia Barrientos for having left an impression on her. Telling VYPE “When I first started golf, she helped me get accustomed to the team and always made sure that she comes to practices and tournaments with a smile and a positive attitude towards her teammates”.
Drees, who is a member of the Wichita Northwest Girls Golf team, shared a favorite memory of hers that actually comes from another sport she participates in – Hockey. Sharing “My favorite athletic memory is winning 3rd place my second year of peewee hockey. It doesn’t sound like the best achievement, but we were the underdogs for most of the season and it was really fun to pull ourselves together during league finals and put up competition in the 3rd-place game against a big rival”.
Drees participates in “BPA because it gives me the opportunity to learn professionalism and develop connections with my peers and leaders, both locally and nationally. I also do robotics because it pushes me in the general direction of engineering and gets me exposed to problem-solving with practical applications”. She is also involved in “National Honor Society because it helps me get involved in my community and do things with my classmates that leaves an impact on others, and that means a lot to me”. Drees volunteers “regularly as a coach for a youth hockey development program. I also do annual projects with my National Honor Society chapter. Last year, we assisted teachers at a local elementary school for a few months, and this year we plan to partner with the Salvation Army to run a book drive during the holiday season” as well.
