Ma’Khiyah Jones of Wichita Southeast led the City League in double-doubles last season, while also being third in the state in that category.
On her way to a first team all-league selection, Jones averaged 11 points, eight rebounds and two steals.
“This season I am most excited about becoming a better athlete and building team chemistry,” Jones said. “During the offseason I was going to the gym in the mornings and working out.”
Jones is a force on the interior, but she wants to expand her game so that she can play both inside and outside.
“One area that I am wanting to improve on is the outside of the perimeter,” Jones said. “Some ways I worked on that area during the offseason was going to the gym in the mornings and I would shoot around for an hour and a half and do leg workouts for 30 minutes.”
The Buffaloes finished last season 16-7 and upset Liberal in the sub-state finals to qualify for the 6A Tournament for the first time since 1988.
Jones wants to get back there again, as well as an individual goal.
“A team goal I have is making it to state again,” Jones said. “An individual goal I have for myself is making 95 percent of my free throws.”
