Wichita North’s Emily Hynes puts in a crazy amount of work off the court! She shared with VYPE “Some clubs I’m a part of at school are Pando, HOSA, TRIO, and STUCO.” As well as “a Mental Health Promotion group, that is supporting the community with advice on mental health. We are currently in the process of becoming a non-profit in Wichita. Our goals are to help others become aware of the effects of social media. We also run an Instagram account, @nhshosamhp, that promotes mental health awareness.”
Telling us “Pando is a group that helps students in school and in their personal lives. They have a community fridge, a free thrift store, and really good resources for community service. I interviewed with Kake News talking about the free thrift store and how Pando has helped the students at North. HOSA is a student-led organization, for people wanting to work in the medical field. The organization is in all 50 states, and in multiple countries around the world. They have conferences for competitions and just for learning purposes. My group won State for our competition, which was Mental Health Promotion. We then went to Internationals in Dallas TX, which are for the state winners and country winners of their competitions, go to compete. We unfortunately didn’t place but we did learn a lot about different medical fields and met new friends.”
According to Hynes “A program I’m a part of is the Biomed Program at North. The program is mainly for students interested in the medical field and is a preparation for pre-med. You can get medical certifications throughout the program at WSU Tech, like CNA, phlebotomy, and EMT. I joined the program my sophomore year because the program was getting more into Vet and animal-based classes.”
Hynes shared that on the court “My favorite part about this team is definitely the energy and all being friends. I think everyone on the team has made a close friend through the team. There’s no drama or issues with anyone. We are all used to each other because we’ve all played with each other for two years. It’s all one big friend group, basically.”
Hynes appears to be well on her way to accomplishing her goals which are “to win the North High volleyball tournament that we host every year. Last year, we got 2nd, and I believe that we can place first this year. I also want to get a lot of scholarships for college, so I’m applying for some right now, too.”
