Wichita Northwest senior golfer Joe Charleston fell in love with the game when he began playing recreationally at a young age with his family. “We used to go camping and golfing all the time and I just love the outdoors and being outside.” Charleston’s love of the game steered him to take up the game in a more serious manner once he reached high school. “I used to play soccer and baseball but never for the high school. I joined the golf team simply because my friend asked me if I wanted to try out my sophomore year.”
Charleston was named a team captain this year, a mantle that he wore with pride and a sense of responsibility, “I would help coach get things set up or just talk to players if they acted up.”
Joe shot a season best 94 on the oftentimes-unforgiving links of Auburn Hills, placing him 13th out of 44 competitors. “I was really proud of that. My goal was to shoot at least a 95, so I was pleased.”
With his senior year coming to a close, the memories are more sweet than bitter for Charleston. “I really enjoyed this season and everyone I played with. It was a great season. Everyone played really well. I think our season is coming to a good ending, and I think the other guys will have a good season next year.”
Charleston plans to begin working immediately after graduation, but with tentative plans to possibly attend trade school in the future.
